Jon Reader was named as an assistant coach at South Dakota State University on August 26, 2014, and has played an integral part in the Jackrabbits' recent success.

Reader was part of a Jackrabbit wrestling coaching staff that guided a Division I era-best five wrestlers to the NCAA Championships during the 2015-16 season. SDSU, which joined the Big 12 Conference as an affiliate member, also turned in its second consecutive winning dual season, posting a 14-6 record and setting a school record for consecutive dual wins with 12.

During his first season on the Jackrabbit coaching staff, Reader helped direct SDSU to its first winning dual season in nine years with an 11-8 record. Three Jackrabbit wrestlers later qualified for the NCAA Championships as SDSU turned in a third-place showing the 2015 NCAA West Regional/Western Wrestling Conference Championships.

Reader came to SDSU following a two-year stint as a volunteer coach at his alma mater, Iowa State. In his time at ISU, he coached three All-Americans and saw the Cyclones place 11th at the 2013 NCAA Championships. He also played a key role in fundraising for the Cyclone Wrestling Club and coordinated summer camps.

While in a Cyclone singlet, Reader wrestled a pair of seasons with current SDSU head coach Chris Bono on the staff. A three-time All-American (2008, 09, 11), he added an NCAA national championship in 2011 at 174 pounds.

During his 2010-11 championship run, Reader went a perfect 39-0 and held the No. 1 ranking in every major poll for the entire year. Of his 39 wins that year, 27 came by bonus points.

Reader compiled a 124-23 career record, good for the 17th-best win percentage in Iowa State’s 100-Win Club. His 124 career victories are tied for eighth all-time at ISU.

The 2011 Big 12 champ also won ISU’s 2010 Most Takedowns Award, Team Leadership Award, 2009 Most Near Falls Award and 2008 Bonus Points Award, along with being a two-time Harold Nichols/Cyclone Open and 2011 Midlands champ.

Reader has also been a mainstay on the international circuit as he is a two-time World Team member. A member of the 2012 University World Team, he represented the U.S. at the 2012 Universtiy World Championship in Kuortane, Finland. Reader also won the 2012 Hari Ram Grand Prix gold medal at 84 kg.

He also competed in the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 86-kilogram weight class.
